Finding Peace, by Will Limón, MSW

During the holidays we hear the word “peace” mentioned more often than at any other time of year.  At spiritual gatherings, social occasions, even at meetings between world leaders, people wonder aloud at the prospects of peace on earth beyond the observances of December.  But peace is not a wish.  It’s a choice.

In our complicated world, peace is not the absence of conflict.  It’s the resolution of conflict through a medium of mutual respect.  Choosing peace comes from recognizing one’s capability of war, and deciding that peaceful means are more desirable and enduring.

Nations choose peace not only by avoiding armed conflict but by addressing the underlying difficulties that promote violence: poverty, intolerance, and isolationism.

You must be aware of your dark side to avoid the slippery slope that leads to destructive conflict.  Then, choose peace in your life.  This is the choice you make when you refrain from repeatedly honking your horn at a distracted driver, barking angry words at a co-worker, or speaking with negative impatience at a child or spouse.  As between nations, peace between individuals is best served through negotiation, understanding and appropriate compromise.

Peace on earth need not be a pipe dream.  Make peaceful choices each day, beginning with peace within you.
